My Approach To Treatment

I approach therapy as a practical and collaborative process. Together, we explore how your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are connected—and how those patterns may be helping or hindering you. My role is to guide you in building insight, flexibility, and resilience, while equipping you with tools to navigate challenges more effectively. Sessions often include a balance of direct feedback, emotional validation, boundary work, and realistic goal setting—plus a sense of humor to keep things grounded.

Expertise in First Responder Mental Health

Working with first responders is not just a specialty—it’s a commitment I’ve made to deeply understand the culture and demands of this unique profession. Firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMS professionals, and other emergency responders operate in a world that’s different from most. Therapy must reflect that. I’ve dedicated myself to learning the nuances of this work—its toll, its strength, and its unspoken rules—so that you don’t have to spend your session explaining what “normal” looks like in your line of duty.

My approach is grounded in respect, collaboration, and training—not fixing. I offer evidence-based strategies tailored to high-stress roles and trauma exposure, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, occupational burnout, moral injury, compassion fatigue, relationship issues, substance misuse, and more. Every client brings a unique story and set of strengths, which is why I tailor treatment to your needs—not the other way around. Above all, I believe that real change begins with trust. I prioritize building a strong, honest therapeutic relationship where you feel seen, understood, and supported—without judgment or pretense. Therapy with me is a shared effort rooted in curiosity, directness, and the belief that you’re already doing the hard work of showing up.

Specialized Treatment

Trauma-Informed Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TI-CBT)

This modality combines structured, evidence-based strategies with a trauma-informed approach tailored for first responders. It’s more than support—it’s training. This therapy helps you understand how repeated exposure to trauma and critical incidents can affect your brain, body, and daily life. You’ll learn how these experiences can influence sleep, mood, relationships, and decision-making. You'll develop skills to reduce distress and improve functioning both at work and at home.

Treatment is collaborative and practical, focused on tools like cognitive restructuring, stress regulation, and resilience-building. Your strengths—like adaptability, problem-solving, and grit—are central to the process.. I recognize the barriers to seeking support, including concerns about stigma and confidentiality. This work is grounded in trust, professionalism, and respect, with the goal of helping you feel better and take back control.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is one of the most effective treatments for trauma and posttraumatic stress. It helps the brain reprocess distressing memories so they no longer feel overwhelming or stuck. Using bilateral stimulation—such as eye movements or tactile input—EMDR activates the brain’s natural healing process, reducing emotional intensity and strengthening more adaptive beliefs.

I tailor EMDR specifically for first responders, using protocols that address the cumulative stress and critical incidents common in the field. This approach offers a structured, supportive space to safely process difficult experiences, regulate emotions, and build lasting resilience. The process is paced carefully, with an emphasis on safety, stability, and giving you control every step of the way. EMDR can stand alone or be integrated with other approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and it is often effective even when traditional talk therapy has not brought relief. Learn more here.
